    The Town of South Boston is seeking candidates for the position of Information Systems Specialist I. Under general supervision, this job performs diversified information systems and administrative duties and responsibilities demanding the use of numerous and various types of information technology equipment and procedures. Problems encountered are routine to difficult in nature.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIO
    NS
    • Provides service on computer hardware and software in municipal government setting.
    • Installs, tests, and maintains computer equipment, peripherals, and network infrastructure
    • Identifies and solves problems related to computer technology; and communicates with users, manufacturers, and vendors concerning hardware or software issues
    • Solves problems related to and maintains workstations
    • Solves problems relating to local and wide area networking of computer workstations
    • Installs and configures new computers and peripherals
    • Installs, configures, and maintains networking equipment including but not limited to switches and wiring
    • Installs new or updates of software on municipal computers
    • Keeps informed on the latest technologies, practices, and programs in the computer field;
    • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
    • Examines and recommends computer hardware and software to Town staff
    • Assists in the implementation of the Town-wide technology plan
    • Maintains access to digital records and staff used digital systems from a variety of sources including, but not limited to, computer databases and other information systems;
    • Maintains backups of digital systems
    • Inputs data into information systems
    • Assists with Town-wide records management program
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    • Candidate must have training and experience servicing computers.
    • Must have experience in maintaining computers, peripherals, and networking devices including, but not limited to, printers, scanners, video equipment such as computer projection devices, switches, and network attached storage devices.
    • Must have at least three years of successful experience, or combination of education and experience, in a computer-related field.
    • A Certification, Network Certification, Server Certification desirable.
    • Bachelor’s Degree in IT related field preferred but not required.
    • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of appropriate software applications to include Microsoft Office 365.
    • Ability to analyze and solve moderately difficult and complex problems
    • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, vendors, and staff
    • Good written and oral communication skills

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Preference will be given to candidates with A, Network, and Server Certifications.
    • Valid driver’s license

    BENEFITS AND SALARY

    Salary Range: $47,000 - $65,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications
    • Retirement program through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS)
    • Tuition reimbursement and educational incentives for qualifying courses of study.

    • 10 accrued sick hours per month, 8-hour per month for annual leave (extends to 12 hours after 5 years)

    • Incentive pay for: $300 per year for an Associate's Degree, $600 per year for a Bachelor's Degree, $900 for a Master's Degree.
