  • Fire Chief

    The Town of South Boston, VA is seeking a Fire Chief to perform difficult skilled protective services and administrative work, managing and directing fire and emergency rescue service activities and related work as required.  Work that involves setting policies and goals under the limited direction of the Town Manager.  Departmental supervision is exercised over Firefights/EMT, Fire Captain/Training Officer, and deputy Fire Chief.
    The Fire Chief plans, organizes and directs division operations regarding equipment, apparatus and personnel, supervises the placing of plans into effect, prepares and presents a variety of operational, statistical and technical reports, prepares division budget and monitors expenditures.  Directs and approves changes in department policies and operating procedures. Evaluates the need for and requisitions new apparatus and supplies. Direct the inspection of buildings and other properties for fire hazards.  Over-see’s fire prevention operations and acts to secure abatement of fire hazard.
    Responsibilities of the Fire Chief include but not limited to:   training, inspecting, and assigning work, developing staff schedules, coaching and counseling, conducting performance evaluations, and recommending for hiring and termination of Firefight/EMT, Fire Captain/training Officer and Deputy Fire Chief.  Performs related tasks as required.
    The Fire Chief will have comprehensive knowledge of modern firefighting, emergency medical and ocean rescue methods, comprehensive knowledge of the use and operation of a wide variety of fire motor, rescue and auxiliary apparatus’, comprehensive knowledge of laws, rules and regulation relating to fire control and prevention, ability to plan ,initiate and carry out long-term programs in fire administration, employee training and fire prevention, ability to plan, assign and coordinate activities performed by a large group of employees in varied firefighting and rescue work, ability to communicate ideas effectively both in oral and written form, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, volunteers, and the general public.
     A valid commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s license, 10-15 years of experience and/or training in the field and current certifications.  -Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    Preferred education and experience of ideal candidates:
    -Associates/Technical degree and extensive experience in firefighting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    - Possession and maintenance of Firefighter Instructor II, EVOC, EMT. Arson, Inspection, and Fire Prevention Certification.
    The Fire Chief reports directly to the Town Manager.  This salaried supervisory position requires a minimum of 40 hours  per week, with additional hours that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary.  Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation
    Starting salary is established at a range of $90,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year depending on experience and qualifications.  Educational pay incentives are offered as an increase to yearly salary for anyone hired with an associates, bachelor's, or master’s degree.  Benefits include the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).
